Android 3.0 Platform

New UI designed from the ground up for tablets
Android 3.0 is a new version of the Android platform that is specifically optimized for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets. It introduces a brand new, truly virtual and “holographic” UI design, as well as an elegant, content-focused interaction model.

Android 3.0 builds on the things people love most about Android — refined multitasking, rich notifications, Home screen customization, widgets, and more — and transforms them with a vibrant, 3D experience and deeper interactivity, making them familiar but even better than before.

The new UI brings fresh paradigms for interaction, navigation, and customization and makes them available to all applications — even those built for earlier versions of the platform. Applications written for Android 3.0 are able to use an extended set of UI objects, powerful graphics, and media capabilities to engage users in new ways.

System Bar, for global status and notifications
Across the system and in all applications, users have quick access to notifications, system status, and soft navigation buttons in a System Bar, available at the bottom of the screen. The System Bar is always present and is a key touchpoint for users, but in a new "lights out mode" can also be dimmed for full-screen viewing, such as for videos.

Action Bar, for application control

In every application, users have access to contextual options, navigation, widgets, or other types of content in an Action Bar, displayed at the top of the screen. The Action Bar is always present when an application is in use, although its content, theme, and other properties are managed by the application rather than the system. The Action Bar is another key touchpoint for users, especially with action items and an overflow dropdown menu, which users frequently access in a similar manner in most applications.

Customizable Home screens

Five customizable Home screens give users instant access to all parts of the system from any context. Each screen offers a large grid that maintains spatial arrangement in all orientations. Users can select and manipulate Home screen widgets, app shortcuts, and wallpapers using a dedicated visual layout mode. Visual cues and drop shadows improve visibility when adjusting the layout of shortcuts and widgets. Each Home screen also offers a familiar launcher for access to all installed applications, as well as a Search box for universal search of apps, contacts, media files, web content, and more.

Recent Apps, for easy visual multitasking

Multitasking is a key strength of Android and it is central to the Android 3.0 experience. As users launch applications to handle various tasks, they can use the Recent Apps list in the System Bar to see the tasks underway and quickly jump from one application context to another. To help users rapidly identify the task associated with each app, the list shows a snapshot of its actual state when the user last viewed it.

Redesigned keyboard

The Android soft keyboard is redesigned to make entering text fast and accurate on larger screen sizes. The keys are reshaped and repositioned for improved targeting, and new keys have been added, such as a Tab key, to provide richer and more efficient text input. Users can touch-hold keys to access menus of special characters and switch text/voice input modes from a button in the System Bar.

Improved text selection, copy and paste

When entering or viewing text, a new UI lets users quickly select a word by press-hold and then adjust the selection area as needed by dragging a set of bounding arrows to new positions. Users can then select an action from the Action Bar, such as copy to the clipboard, share, paste, web search, or find.

New connectivity options

Android 3.0 includes new connectivity features that add versatility and convenience for users. Built-in support for Media/Picture Transfer Protocol lets users instantly sync media files with a USB-connected camera or desktop computer, without needing to mount a USB mass-storage device. Users can also connect full keyboards over either USB or Bluetooth, for a familiar text-input environment. For improved wi-fi connectivity, a new combo scan reduces scan times across bands and filters. New support for Bluetooth tethering means that more types of devices can share the network connection of an Android-powered device.

Updated set of standard apps

The Android 3.0 platform includes an updated set of standard applications that are designed for use on larger screen devices. The sections below highlight some of the new features.

Browser
The browser includes new features that let users navigate and organize more efficiently. Multiple tabs replace browser windows and a new “incognito” mode allows anonymous browsing. Bookmarks and history are presented and managed in a single unified view. Users can now choose to automatically sign into Google sites on the browser with a supplied account and sync bookmarks with Google Chrome. New multitouch support is now available to JavaScript and plugins. Users can enjoy a better browsing experience at non-mobile sites through an improved zoom and viewport model, overflow scrolling, support for fixed positioning, and more.

Camera and Gallery
The Camera application has been redesigned to take advantage of a larger screen for quick access to exposure, focus, flash, zoom, front-facing camera, and more. To let users capture scenes in new ways, it adds built-in support for time-lapse video recording. The Gallery application lets users view albums and other collections in full-screen mode, with easy access to thumbnails for other photos in the collection.

Contacts

The Contacts app uses a new two-pane UI and Fast Scroll to let users easily organize and locate contacts. The application offers improved formatting of international phone numbers as user types, based on home country and an international number parsing library. Contact information is presented in a card-like UI, making it easier for users to read and edit contacts.

Email

The Email application uses a new two-pane UI to make viewing and organizing messages more efficient. The app lets users select one or more messages, then select an action from the Action Bar, such as moving them to a folder. Users can sync attachments for later viewing and keep track of email using a home screen Widget.

Optimize Windows 7 for better performance

Try the Performance troubleshooter

The first thing that you can try is the Performance troubleshooter, which can automatically find and fix problems. The Performance troubleshooter checks issues that might slow down your computer's performance, such as how many users are currently logged on to the computer and whether multiple programs are running at the same time.

Open the Performance troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Check for performance issues.

Delete programs you never use

Many PC manufacturers pack new computers with programs you didn't order and might not want. These often include trial editions and limited-edition versions of programs that software companies hope you'll try, find useful, and then pay to upgrade to full versions or newer versions. If you decide you don't want them, keeping the software on your computer might slow it down by using precious memory, disk space, and processing power.

It's a good idea to uninstall all the programs you don't plan to use. This should include both manufacturer-installed software and software you installed yourself but don't want any more—especially utility programs designed to help manage and tune your computer's hardware and software. Utility programs such as virus scanners, disk cleaners, and backup tools often run automatically at startup, quietly chugging along in the background where you can't see them. Many people have no idea they're even running.

Even if your PC is older, it might contain manufacturer-installed programs that you never noticed or have since forgotten about. It's never too late to remove these and get rid of the clutter and wasted system resources. Maybe you thought you might use the software someday, but never did. Uninstall it and see if your PC runs faster.

For instructions, see Uninstall or change a program.

Limit how many programs run at startup

Many programs are designed to start automatically when Windows starts. Software manufacturers often set their programs to open in the background, where you can't see them running, so they'll open right away when you click their icons. That's helpful for programs you use a lot, but for programs you rarely or never use, this wastes precious memory and slows down the time it takes Windows to finish starting up.

Decide for yourself if you want a program to run at startup.

But how can you tell what programs run automatically at startup? Sometimes this is obvious, because the program adds an icon to the notification area on the taskbar, where you can see it running. Look there to see if there are any programs running that you don’t want to start automatically. Point to each icon to see the program name. Be sure to click the Show hidden icons button so you don't miss any icons.

Defragment your hard disk

Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer. Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your hard disk can work more efficiently. Disk Defragmenter runs on a schedule, but you can also defragment your hard disk manually.

For more information, see Improve performance by defragmenting your hard disk.

Clean up your hard disk

Unnecessary files on your hard disk take up disk space and can slow down your computer. Disk Cleanup removes temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of system files and other items that you no longer need. For step-by-step instructions on how to do this, see Delete files using Disk Cleanup.

Atomic Floyd SuperDarts review High-end earphones with top-end sound and a price to match

There are two types of earphones.
There are those that sound good, and those that don't.
Unfortunately, those in the former category are much rarer than the latter, and to get hold of them you usually need to spend quite a large chunk of your children's inheritance.

The issue is clouded by the likes of the Beats by Dr. Dre range, which claim to deliver "studio quality" audio, but in fact do nothing of the sort.

The Atomic Floyd SuperDarts, though, are genuinely fantastic. The build quality is first rate. The materials used are premium. And the sound quality...

Of course, for a pair of earphones that cost £199 you would expect them to deliver a sound experience that impresses you every time you use them.

You want the sound to be crisp and punchy, smooth and deep, soothing and yet startling. You want the high-end to tingle on your ear drums, with every sonic vibration adding extra detail to the soundscape. You want the low end to bulge with every fibre of a bass guitar's string, with every drum beat popping as though being played right in front of you.

he SuperDarts do all that. They take audio from its source and they inject it directly into your temporal lobe.

The solid stainless steel earbuds each contain dual drivers, which means two mini speakers in each ear. This is an expensive way to build an earbud, but it undoubtedly delivers better sound, with each driver individually handling a separate part of the sound spectrum.
The SoftSeal silicone eartips create a good level of noise isolation to eliminate external noises, too. That's great for sound quality, but not so good if you're waiting for an important phone call - set phasers to vibrate.

A big bugbear of ours when it comes to earphones are the cables. You put them in a bag, and within 16 millionths of a second they become entangled in a hellish network of knots so complex it takes minutes to sort out.

Unless you're extremely careful, it's very easy to make this knotted mess worse as you attempt to untangle it.
On the cable is a stainless steel remote control, which enables you to play and pause your music as well as toggle the volume up and down.

These earphones are part of the Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad programme, and the microphone in the cable also enables you to have hands-free phone calls without popping the earbuds out. Music automatically pauses when the call comes in.

The downside here is that this feature only works with Apple devices. We tried with a few Android phones and were unsuccessful. So if you want the remote and hands-free features to work, you're going to need an iDevice.

In the premium box you get the earphones themselves, a carry case, DJ jack adapter, plane adapter and three sets of silicone earbuds in different sizes.

So they're pretty good then. They're brilliant, in fact. You just need to decide whether you can afford to drop 19,900 pennies on them.

If you can't, you can content yourself with the knowledge that you'll never now how good your music could have sounded. And if you can? Your ears will love you for the rest of your life.

How to choose good laptop

* Laptop Size and Weight Guide
Obviously the size and weight of a laptop is important. Netbooks offer light weight and sizes but sacrifice items such as drives and performance. Desktop replacements have equivalent power to desktop systems but they are heavy and bulky making them difficult to carry around. When shopping for a laptop, make sure to pick up the systems and verify its something you are willing to carry. Don't forget to also consider the weight of accessories such as AC adapter when carrying around the laptop.

Processors (CPU)
Mobile processors typically were slower than desktop CPUs but that has changed. Dual-core processors are common and help with multitasking. The type of processors found in the laptop will vary based upon the size and purpose of the laptop. They have a direct impact on performance as well as battery life so comparison can be difficult. Check out my listings for suggested processors for the various types of laptop PCs available.

* Laptop Processor Buyer's Guide

Memory (RAM)
Laptops are generally more restricted in the amount of memory they can have compared to desktops. When looking at computers you want to make sure to check out the maximum memory the system can handle as well as the amount that is installed in the computer. It is also useful to find out if a memory upgrade can be done yourself or if it has to be done by a technician. Two gigabytes should really be the minimum amount of memory to consider with 4GB for improved performance.

* Laptop Memory Buyer's Guide

Displays and Video
The video on a laptop computer is comprised of the display and the video processor. The display is defined by the screen size and the native resolution. The larger the display, the higher the resolution will typically be, but it also will impact how portable the system is. Wide screen displays are now standard. The graphics processor will determine the performance of the computer in things such as 3D graphics and high definition video acceleration.

* Understanding Laptop Video

Drives
How much storage space will you need? Hard drives are fairly straight forward in terms of the size and the performance may be impacted by the rotational speed. Optical drives play a more important role when purchasing a laptop PC. DVD burners are pretty much a standard feature supporting the dual layer media. Direct labeling features such as Label Flash and LightScribe are available. Blu-ray is available for viewing high definition video but are still fairly uncommon.

* Understanding Laptop Drives

Networking
The ability to connect to the net is integral to most laptops today. Look for systems that include a built in Fast Ethernet and Wi0Fi. For the minimum amount of wireless connectivity, look at getting a notebook with 802.11b/g. Systems with the 802.11n draft standard are also fairly common now. For those that need connectivity in remote locations, a built-in modem or a cellular (WWAN) card are also options.

* Understanding Laptop Networking
* What is Networking?

Battery Life
How good is a portable computer going to be if you are only able to get 30 minutes of computing time on a single charge? Try to find the manufacturer's listed battery life for the standard battery. Look to get a system with at least 2 hours of battery life under normal conditions. If you need extended time unplugged, look for laptops with media bays that can double as extra battery slots or have extended life batteries that can be purchased.

* 10 Battery Life Tips

Warranty Plans
Laptops take a lot of abuse and are more prone to breakdowns due to their portability. When buying a system, make sure to get at least a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer. If you will be using the system heavily, a system that comes with a 3 year warranty might be a better choice but it will cost more. Third party extended plans are not a good choice unless service is done through the manufacturer.

How to choose a laptop

1 Read through How to Choose a Desktop Computer. The "Before you shop" points and most of "The basics" also apply when shopping for a laptop. 2 Pick up the laptops at the store. (Ask to have them unlocked if necessary.) Choose one that feels sturdy, solid and not too heavy.

3 Try the keyboard. Since you can't replace it (except with the exact same item), make sure you're comfortable with its touch and responsiveness. Test it on a desk and on your lap.

4 Test the pointing device, track pad or track ball, the laptop alternatives to a mouse. Some of these can be hard to master. You'll be able to connect an external mouse, but the built-in device is more handy when you're mobile.

5 Check if the computer's bottom gets uncomfortably hot when it's running--a problem if you actually use the laptop on your lap.

6 Pay attention to screen size and resolution. Current liquid-crystal display (LCD) screens on laptops measure from 13 to 21 inches diagonally. Screen resolution may be as low as 800 x 600 pixels or as high as 1600 x 1200. The more pixels, the crisper the screen image. View the screen in a variety of settings: A screen that looks great in normal room lighting can look terrible in bright or dim light.

7 Choose a laptop with at least two USB 2 connections and at least one Firewire (IEEE1394) connection. USB 2 and Firewire are very popular and fast ways of connecting iPods, digital cameras and some phones to computers.

8 Check to see if the laptop has built in wireless capabilities, most do these days. A wireless network card (also called Wi-Fi or 802.11) will free you from having to be wired to your Internet connection (see How to Network Your Computers). Also, Bluetooth capability will let you share information wirelessly with other Bluetooth-equipped devices, such as your cell phone or personal digital assistant.

9 Check to see if the laptop has a DVD Burner. That makes backing up documents, music files and pictures a snap because of the high capacity of the discs.

10 Get an antitheft device. Hundreds of thousands of laptops are stolen every year. Look for cables that secure the laptop to a desk. Install software that disables a stolen laptop, or better yet, reports the laptop's location when it connects to the Internet.

Dual Core Android Phones to Expect in 2011

Motorola Droid Bionic 4G:

This particular Android phone features a color popping 4.3-inch screen, an 8-megapixel camera, and dual-core 1 GHz processor, with HDMI output. Motorola DROID BIONIC will be one of the first Android handsets to rock Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Its screen is going to be on par with the IPhone4 (540 x 960) display and its dual-core processor while party with 512MB of DDR2 RAM. HD video capabilities and a front-facing camera will make video calling a smooth experience. All the latest goodies packed into it, it will have Adobe Flash and HTML 5 support, as well as HDMI output to provide your large screen TV your mobile goodness in a flash.

Motorola Atrix: “The World’s Most Powerful Smartphone”

In a word – ridiculous! Check out our review of the Motorola Atrix here.

Motorola ATRIX 4G is no other but the long-rumored Motorola Olympus – a Tegra 2-powered dual-core Android beast, which has been dubbed by Moto as “the world’s most powerful smartphone” (Oh marketers) This gargantuan phone will feature a giant 4 inch HD screen with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, as well as the whooping 1GB of RAM and a substantial 1930mAh battery to keep the whole thing humming along.

The Motorola ATRIX also has a 3.5mm audio socket, support for 802.11b, g and n WiFi and comes with a comprehensive multimedia player capable of video playback resolutions up to 1080p including DivX and XviD support.

And, for those of you wondering how it stacks up to the almighty iPhone – view our speed test and comparison of the iPhone 4 Vs. the Motorola Atrix here.

LG Optimus 2X:

This particular beast features virtually identical specs to the Motorola Atrix, but with a different design. This is LG’s new flagship Android smartphone. Holding the device in your hand, it feels rock solid and super high quality. It’s excellence is apparent in both the specs and the design.

The display is simply amazing. It features LG’s new “NOVA” display, which LG claims is the worlds brightest.

The processor is Nvidia’s Tegra 2 (AP20H) processor. It’s a 1 GHz dual-core number, plus a GPU (which is technically eight-core.) Sure enough, using the phone, everything is quick and smooth. The interesting thing about a dual-core Android phone is that it can use one core for the main app, and let background processes use the second core. This will mean less slowdown due to things running in the background.

The design is gorgeous, and the build quality feels sublime. It’s bigger than an iPhone, but that’s all in the height. Being tall doesn’t affect hand fit. The width and thickness (it’s quite thin) fit great in the hand, and the tapered sides make it feel worlds more comfortable than the iPhone.

The Optimus 2X has a size-to-weight ratio that’s quite dense. That gives it a high-quality feel off the bat. It feels like one quality piece of technology. The glass (or glass-like) front and soft-touch metal back feel great, and the build quality are top-notch.

Samsung Galaxy S II

This is currently the world’s fastest, most powerful, and thinnest phone. Samsung’s market share increased in a big way in 2010, with tons of great phones. They also went ahead and announced their next-generation dual-core CPU for smartphones. Named the Orion and using dual core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 cores paired with an enhanced GPU that offers 5x 3D graphics performance over the previous generation Hummingbird, this particular phone is set to be a serious contender in 2011. Previous to this, Samsung has been using a PowerVR SGX GPU from Imagination Technologies, so it’s likely we will see the next-gen version being used with the Orion processor. Plus, it’s packing the most beautiful display on the market, a super AMOLED 4.27 inch display, which, we can assure you, is the best display on any mobile device to date.

It features a 1.2GHz processor, 4G (on AT&T’s HSPA+ network), and an 8 megapixel back-side camera. A 1.3 megapixel webcam points the other direction. Capable of 1080p video at 30fps, it’s a force to be reckoned with.

10 Ways to Make Your Laptop Run Faster

1. Start with a disk cleanup. There are several ways to access this, but one is to click on the Start Program>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup. This will allow you to delete temporary Internet Files, Offline Files, the recycling bin, and other types of unnecessary files.

2. Through the Control Panel, go to Internet Tools and delete cookies and history. This can take several minutes if it hasn’t been done in awhile.

3. Disk Defragment. You can access this the same way as a disk cleanup, but select disk defragmenter instead. Many programs allow you to schedule a time to do this application, as it can take several minutes or several hours depending on how much work is to be done.

4. Malware or Spyware are big offenders of slowing down laptops. Installing and running an anti-malware or anti-virus program and running it regularly will often times make a tremendous difference.

5. Check your power management by accessing the Control Panel. Select power management and then Maximum or Best Performance. If you use your battery pack rather than being plugged in it will drain quickly, but will give you optimal speed.

6. From the Control Panel, go to Add or Remove programs. Remove programs that you know you are not using. This can be a daunting task, since some programs affect others, and therefore you may want to know what’s important before you remove it.

7. Check the memory usage of your computer. You may need to add more random access memory (RAM) to store memory, rather than using disk space that is slower in all cases.

8. Consider using registry software cleaner or repair program. There are many good ones out there such as ccleaner.com or registryfix.com. These will identify and repair problems within the registry.

9. New computers that use Windows Vista can be slowed down by excess animation. It is possible to turn it off by going to the Control Panel>System and Maintenance>Performance Information and tools>Advanced Tools. Then select Adjust the Appearance and Performance of Windows. The Performance Options box will prompt, and if you select Custom, then uncheck Animate Windows when Maximazing and Minimizing. You can consider other options as well, but this definitely pep it up.

10. Use an external hard drive to store all music, photos and games. It can be unplugged and used with multiple computers, and will save valuable space.

1. Plug-in your USB flash drive to USB port and move all the contents from USB drive to a safe location on your system.
2. Open Command Prompt with admin rights. Use any of the below methods to open Command Prompt with admin rights.
*Type cmd in Start menu search box and hit Ctrl+ Shift+ Enter.
Or
*Go to Start menu > All programs > Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
3. You need to know about the USB drive a little bit. Type in the following commands in the command prompt:
First type DISKPART and hit enter to see the below message.

Next type LIST DISK command and note down the Disk number (ex: Disk 1) of your USB flash drive. In the below screenshot my Flash Drive Disk no is Disk 1.
4. Next type all the below commands one by one. Here I assume that your disk drive no is “Disk 1”.If you have Disk 2 as your USB flash drive then use Disk 2.Refer the above step to confirm it.
So below are the commands you need to type and execute one by one:
SELECT DISK 1
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS
(Format process may take few seconds)
ASSIGN
EXIT
Don’t close the command prompt as we need to execute one more command at the next step. Just minimize it.

5. Next insert your Windows7/Vista DVD into the optical drive and check the drive letter of the DVD drive. In this guide I will assume that your DVD drive letter is “D” and USB drive letter is “H” (open my computer to know about it).
6. Maximize the minimized Command Prompt in the 4th step.Type  the following command now:
D: CD BOOT and hit enter.Where “D” is your DVD drive letter.
CD BOOT and hit enter to see the below message.
7. Type another command given below to update the USB drive with BOOTMGR compatible code.
BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 H:

Where “H” is your USB drive letter. Once you enter the above command you will see the below message.
8. Copy your Windows 7/Vista DVD contents to the USB flash drive.
9. Your USB drive is ready to boot and install Windows 7/Vista. Only thing you need to change the boot priority at the BIOS to USB from the HDD or CD ROM drive. I won’t explain it as it’s just the matter the changing the boot priority or enabling the USB boot option in the BIOS.
Note: If you are not able to boot after following this guide means you haven’t set the BIOS priority to USB. If you got any problem in following this guide feel free to ask questions by leaving comment.
Update: If you find this guide difficult to follow, please use the easy-to-use guide to create a bootable USB to install Windows 7 using official tool.
